POSITION SUMMARY

Assist uptown Environmental Health & Safety Specialist (OEHS) with general safety compliance activities (inspections, conducting fire drills, investigating complaints/incidents, etc.) on uptown campus.  Responsible for ensuring technical and regulatory compliance with federal, state, and local air and water (waste water, storm water, drinking water) regulations University-wide.  Evaluate laboratory and research facilities for compliance with recommended Bio-Safety Level (BSL) design and construction related to primary and secondary barriers of containment.  Participates in OEHS Emergency On-Call Program for safety and health issues at Tulane.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor of Science Degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health Sciences or related scientific field of study and two years of pertinent experience in environmental compliance, safety, or environmental health, or Master of Science degree in applicable area of study.
  2. Work experience and/or coursework in environmental health and safety areas such as, OSHA/EPA compliance, Louisiana air and water regulations, laboratory safety, Bio-Safety, industrial hygiene and fire safety preferred.
  3. University work experience preferred.
  4. Excellent written and oral communication skills and computer proficiency in standard word processing, spreadsheet/database, and presentation software required (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint preferred)”.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

40%                 1.         Assist uptown Environmental Health & Safety Specialist with implementation of Environmental Health and Safety program on uptown campus.  Help conduct building inspections, fire drills, incident investigations, hazard assessments, etc.

Performance Standards:

Tasks are performed accurately and efficiently.  Makes responsible decisions.

Researches and develops recommendations on environmental health and safety issues.

Strives to increase knowledge and personal growth in work-related areas.  Represents

OEHS in a knowledgeable and professional manner.  Works well with others.

30%     2.         Responsible for ensuring technical and regulatory compliance with state (DHH, DEQ)

and federal air and water (wastewater, storm water, drinking water) regulations (CAA,

CWA) university-wide.  Review and maintain permits and other associated documents.

Review grant proposals, facility design plans, and existing operations for compliance

with air and water environmental regulations.  Interfaces with regulatory agencies

regarding regulatory reform and related activities university-wide.  Conducts annual

assessments of Tulane’s environmental health programs to identify and control

significant environmental health hazards and risks apart from those involving hazardous

waste, but will work with Hazardous Waste Supervisor on related issues.

Duties are performed accurately and efficiently.  Ability to work independently.

Documentation is maintained in a timely and confidential manner.  Researches and

develops recommendations on air and water environmental compliance issues.  Strives

to increase knowledge and personal growth in work related areas.  Work well with

others.

25%     3.         Evaluate laboratory facilities for compliance with recommended Bio-Safety Level

(BSL) design and construction requirement as outlined in the Centers of Disease Control (CDC) publication “Bio-Safety in Microbiological & Biomedical Labs.”  Work with Director of Bio-Safety (Office of Research Administration) to ensure research facilities meet applicable design requirements for primary and secondary containment of biological agents.

Tasks are performed accurately and efficiently.  Able to make responsible decisions.

Researches and develops recommendations on compliance with regulatory

requirements.    Strives to increase knowledge and personal growth in work related areas.

5%       4.         Performs other duties as assigned by the Director. Serve on Tulane’s Emergency

Response Team during emergency situations and implements emergency actions

and plans as needed.  Participate in OEHS Emergency On-Call Program for health

and safety issues at Tulane.

Performance Standards:

Exhibits a willingness to learn new tasks and take on added responsibilities.  Must be

dependable and cooperative.

EQUIPMENT USED:

Personal computer and other office equipment, personal protective equipment (respirator, gloves, protective eyewear, etc.).  Field testing equipment (air flow hood, anemometer, light meter, combustible gas analyzer, etc.), and exposure monitoring equipment (sound level meter, noise dosimeters, etc.).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Sitting, standing, carrying, climbing, walking, driving and moderate lifting. Must be medically qualified to wear a negative pressure respirator.  Must have a valid driver’s license and have automobile.
