Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship for HIV Prevention in Communities of Color

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention (DHAP) proudly announces that it is offering four two-year post-doctoral research fellowships — the 2009-2011 DHAP/ORISE Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships for HIV Prevention in Communities of Color. The mission of this fellowship program is to recruit, mentor, and train recently graduated doctoral-level researchers (with doctorates earned no earlier than May 2004 and no later than May 2009) in conducting research leading to the prevention of HIV infection in communities of color in the United States.

New Connections

he Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s (RWJF) New Connections: Increasing Diversity of RWJF Programming aims to expand the diversity of perspectives that inform RWJF programming and introduce new researchers and scholars to the Foundation, while simultaneously helping to meet staff needs for data analysis. The program invites Junior Investigators-scholars from historically disadvantaged and underrepresented communities who have received their doctorate within the last seven years-to address specific questions posed by one of RWJF’s program areas using secondary data analysis. Eligible scholars include individuals from ethnic or racial minorities or low-income communities, first-generation college graduates, or others who historically have been underrepresented in research disciplines that RWJF supports.

Incorporated in 1993, the Institute of Women & Ethnic Studies (IWES) is a not-for-profit 501[c](3) organization based in New Orleans, Louisiana. IWES is dedicated to improving the physical, mental, and spiritual health and quality of life for women of color and their families. The Sexual & Reproductive Health Advocacy Project (SRHAP) is a participatory action research project designed to advocate for services, resources and policies in post-Katrina New Orleans that support a reproductive justice agenda, particularly mental, sexual and reproductive health services for underserved women, their families and communities.

The purpose of this position is to provide leadership and direction in the development, management, and implementation of sample surveys, statistical and demographic research and scientific activities related to tobacco use and surveillance activities that focus on tobacco-related behavior and attitudes in an international setting. The incumbent has survey research experience and applies expertise in demography, statistics, and epidemiology to the design and implementation of sample surveys in the 16 countries. Incumbent plans, collaborates and facilitates the implementation of tobacco use prevalence and related indicators internationally and works closely with high-ranking members of the Ministries of Health and WHO offices and partners in these countries.
